He declined and in 2007 blew the whistle on what we now know to be a US torture program, which eventually landed him in jail. In 1956 werd het eerste televisie journaal van Nederland uitgezonden en in 1965 ging Janneke Monshouwer er werken. Dat was een tijd van pionieren: de eerste televisie reclame zou pas twee jaar later komen, net als kleurentelevisie. Janneke vertelt hoe het nieuws toen nog werd gemaakt en hoe ze het zag veranderen. Ze zou 28 jaar lang bij de Nederlandse televisie blijven werken maar werd uiteindelijk ziek van geheime, stiekeme dingen die ze zag en onwaarheden om zaken te verbergen. Ze zegt daarover: ‘dat is voor mij het allerergste. Natuurlijk krijg ik ook stress van nare dingen die in de wereld gebeuren, maar onwaarheid is het ergste. Als ik uitzoek wat er echt aan de hand is, hoe erg ook, dat is genezend’.
