Interview with Joe Lauria of Consortium News, at Peace Rally in Amsterdam
On the 28th of January 2024, the monthly organized Dutch Peace Rally takes place at Dam Square Amsterdam. It’s only been two days, since the judges of the International Court of Justice communicated their ruling on the case about genocide in Gaza, brought by South Africa against Israel. Editor in Chief of Consortium News, Joe Lauria, happens to be in the Netherlands to receive the Dutch Julian Assange Award by the Dutch Free Journalists Association (VVJ). In this interview at Dam Square in Amsterdam we talk about the situation in Gaza, geopolitics, choices the press make in coverage of certain topics, and about the case of Julian Assange. Also in this report, impressions from the rally and an on-stage interview with Djamila le Pair, who was present at the court ruling last Friday.
During the interview Rico says no Dutch journalists were present during the February 2020 weeklong hearings of Assange at Woolwich Crown Court. This was nog entirely factual. Dutch Public broadcaster NOS then foreign correspondent Tim de Wit was there, on the Monday morning only, to report about the opening statement made by the US. Tim was not available for an interview back then about the journalistic choices he made in his report.

28 januari 2024. De maandelijkse vredesbijeenkomst op de Dam in Amsterdam vond dit keer plaats kort na de uitspraak van het internationale gerechtshof over de Gaza Genocide zaak, die door Zuid-Afrika tegen Israël was aangespannen. Hoofdredacteur Joe Lauria van Consortium News is toevallig in Nederland om de Julian Assange Award van de Vereniging Vrije Journalisten (VVJ) in ontvangst te nemen. In dit interview opgenomen op De Dam praten we over de situatie in Gaza, geopolitiek, keuzes die de pers maakt bij de berichtgeving over bepaalde onderwerpen en over de zaak van Julian Assange.
Tijdens het interview zegt Rico dat er geen Nederlandse journalisten hebben gerapporteerd over de week lange hoorzitting van Assange in februari 2020 bij Woolwich Crown Court. Dit was niet geheel feitelijk, aangezien toenmalig NOS buitenlandcorrespondent Tim de Wit er eventjes was. Alleen die maandagochtend, om op de nationale radio verslag uit te brengen over de openingstoespraak van de VS. Tim was destijds niet beschikbaar voor een interview over de journalistieke keuzes die hij in zijn rapport maakte.
Ook in dit verslag impressies van de demonstratie en een interview met Djamila Le Pair die aanwezig was bij de uitspraak van de rechtbank afgelopen vrijdag.
