You want to have confident children, who aren’t afraid - Home-schooling pt. 3, Heidi and Ilene Botha (English)

In this episode, Djamila le Pair interviews South African-born Heidi Botha and her daughter Ilene, who live in the beautiful countryside of West-Berkshire, United Kingdom, where the two mothers met almost two decades ago.

While still living in South Africa, Heidi already intended to home educate her two children, but when the young family moved to the U.K. and a new social network needed to be built, she decided to send her son Rowan to school, after all, so that he, at least, would meet playmates. Several months went by during which Heidi watched Rowan becoming increasingly unhappy and frustrated. She took him out and after several months of free play and fun activities, Heidi started home educating her two children through the rest of their school years. Ilene, studying to be a dental nurse, now looks back on many happy years in which she learned to question things, find answers herself and apply acquired knowledge instantly to everyday life. Learning many practical skills from their father, Leslie, too,

Rowan and Ilene were involved in changing tires, sailing and building sheds, for example. Everything around them provided a learning experience and still does. For the Botha family, life is a journey of continuous, applied learning, nurturing resilience, self-esteem and resourcefulness. One’s own curiosity should never be stifled!
