This is part one of a two part interview on state sponsored torture and the US detention center at Guantanamo bay.

Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, as of 1903 is the oldest overseas naval base of the US. It got a prison that the world allowed to be placed outside of international law in 2002, where prisoners were being tortured. President Obama vowed to close the prison in 2009 then reversed that decision in 2011. It is still open and in use today.

And now we have Trump, making public statements on how he would outperform his adversaries also through the practise of state sponsored torture. In 2016 the website ‘witnessagainsttorture.com’ was started to raise public awareness and people protest in the streets of Washington, even seventeen years after Guantanamo Bay prison was opened because there are still people held there, even though they’ve been cleared for release.

Raymond Johansen talks about black-sites, state sponsored torture in the US, Europe and Africa and how people’s initiatives like ‘Witness Against Torture’ - which he supports- might achieve what a US presidents may not: reinstate the rule of law through public awareness.

In part two of this interview Raymond and Rico talk to CIA whistleblower John Kiriakou.
